When you buy an iPhone through an AT&T or Verizon retail store (not a corporate store), are you able to purchase apple+ directly through the retail store or do you still need to go to an Apple Store to purchase apple+?

Not from any of the smaller resellers in my area. It really isn't a problem to add AppleCare+ after the fact, though. I purchased my iPad 3 at Target which did not give me the option to add AppleCare+, so I called Apple when I got home and they added it for me over the phone. I think if you live so many miles away from a Apple store they can Add it over the phone for you as well.

I found out yesterday when I called Apple to add AC+ to the White 4S that I bought brand new in a sealed box from eBay that they will only add it over the phone if you don't have an Apple store within 50 miles. I had to go to the Apple store in NJ last night to add it as it was 28 miles from me. The Apple rep said he would have added it over the phone for a iPad but that the iPhone was different.
