What do the bubbles around Mario mean in Super Mario Run?

Throughout the game you'll end up collecting bubbles when busting question mark boxes. There's even a counter for how many you have collected on screen but what do they do? Well, they basically take you back in the game. Kind of like a save point to a certain extent. Say if you're playing and you die, and you have a bubble to use, it will take you back in the game to an earlier point and allow you to pick up from there.
