What is wrong if there is no pokemon in the little gray box?

On my pokemon go it is very hard to find pokemon there is no pokemon showing up in the little gray box and also nothing shows up in the store button.

It's not a phone. It's an app that apparently has been blowing up Imore. I hear that they are having server issues.

I've been following. We're very careful. We're not looking for them in dark alleys or anything. Just walking around the neighborhood during their swim meets, etc.
