Still waiting on my iP7+ after I returned my explodable Note 7 (teach me to leave the walled garden) but I notice on it and my son's Note 4 that "Selective Focus" does the same thing - what's the difference?

Samsung's selective focus does the same thing. On the S7E and even better on the Note7, IME it's superior to Apple's for usability and overall output. Right now the beta is making photos generally unusable due to mistakes in the post processing. I usually just frame with the 2X providing sufficient light is available and the results look better. If I truly need crazy bokeh I use a real camera. ;)

With some fine tuning, portrait mode will be an all around good solution for those wanting to point and shoot and get satisfactory results. Expecting a camera phone to be on the same level as a pro medium format camera is about as silly as expecting a tiny speaker the size of your palm to be able to produce room filling, full range sound!

Beautiful sunrise from Saturday morning. Touched up in Lightroom mobile app. Didn't frame the shot the best; just happened to look outside and wanted to capture the color before it was gone.
