Lenovo may buy RIM?

Lenovo, now the world’s second largest PC-maker, is giving serious consideration to buying out RIM, following RIM CEO Thorsten Heins’ comments about selling off his company’s hardware division after the launch of BlackBerry 10.

Bloomberg is reporting that Lenovo's CFO, Wang Wai Ming, told the World Economic Forum in Davos on Thursday that Lenovo is now considering many options for improving its mobile division – and one of them is a buy-out of RIM.

‘We are looking at all opportunities — RIM and many others,’ said Ming. ‘We’ll have no hesitation if the right opportunity comes along that could benefit us and shareholders.’

RIM isn't in the game to sell themselves. BlackBerry 10 is an effort to reinvent the company and bring it back to its former glory. I personally guarantee they won't discuss a sale until after at least 2 bad quarters on BB10. So that won't be until around October or later.

Why?

They want to boost their mobile division. RIM has a great base in which to work off of, they just always are late to the game for one reason or another.

I think it would be great for Lenovo, especially if they can do something with RIM

HP did well buying Palm. I'm sure someone will snap up RIM..lol

Don't think BlackBerry plans to sell. They presented their strategy at the launch event and it most definitely does not involve a sale, at least short term.

They have a huge global and enterprise subscriber base. They plan to use that existing base for stability, all the while expanding through Asia and Africa. The Canadian adoption of the platform will be there, most certainly. The US will take a little longer. But they can regain a lot of lost ground with this OS and get to #3.

Keep in mind that BlackBerry'a primary competition, especially in the short term, is not Apple and the iPhone. They are currently competing with Windows Phone and android. BB10 is aimed at the users who want a slightly more complicated experience with a big learning curve. Users that want easy to use will always choose Apple because it just works. Many i know that have switched from iOS to Android have regretted it almost immediately and switched back.
