Default iPhone 5 or wait for blackberry 10

Had to lulz at the BBM comment. If I had a dollar for every active BBM user, I'd be broke.

The opinion of iOS is not mine, but came from an article that described iOS as being "aged", it was written in March 2011. Yes, that was 2 years ago.
The features of BB10 that I have featured are not "hypothetical", they have been included in the version of BB10 that was installed on thousands of prototype devices that were distributed to developers last year. RIM has also demonstrated them at developer roadshows and in videos. The ability to separate company and personal functions is currently active on the Playbook and would be very beneficial to both companies and their employees.
I was not convinced that BB10 will be a great os until very recently and it also seems to have been positively received by the media and carriers.

What Sean is trying to say is this RIMs last chance at staying relevant. Their market share has dwindled to abysmal levels and everything is riding on the success of BB10. I must say it does look very innovative and cool but from my experience with Blackberry the app support is terrible granted this was 3 years ago it may have gotten better.

iOS is an established and trusted OS and most people won't care how old it is. This argument that keeps surfacing is geared towards the technophiles and hardcore users, we're the only ones that care about this song and dance.

A few years ago I switched to Android cause I was bored of iOS but this year I switched back because I got tired of Android and after using iOS again for 7 months I'm not switching back.

RIM has its work cut out for them when their biggest customer is the government and they have to convince the masses BB10 is worth leaving something like iOS for. I'm personally not seeing it.

Every user perspective is different then the next person.....

If your life style is Apple, Mac's and other iOS devices, then go iPhone 5.

If you want to try something else, go for it. Some other phones or OS's might meet your needs more.

Lots of things are included in beta versions of software that never see the light of day...happens in all of them, including iOS. Your comments are hypothetical...and a bit humorous.

And out of all those dev alpha devices, how many apps does RIM expect to get? Hand out what? A couple hundred dev apps and maybe get half a dozen apps or so?

Also, the quality of the apps and their content need to be addressed. Sure, it's nice to have half a dozen calculator apps, but where are the ones the public wants? Where are the ones that actually lead to productivity and not just game apps?

I was not convinced that BB10 will be a great os until very recently and it also seems to have been positively received by the media and carriers.
I think BBX has potential but without dev support for the in demand apps like Angry Birds, Skype and the (Insert game title here) with Friends, it'll tank.

Dude, killing pigs is fun. Where do you think bacon comes from?

Back on topic, I agree with John Yester's advice - if you've bought into the iOS ecosystem, it’s a no-brainer. If you’ve not subscribed to the iOS way of life, wait a month, test drive the new BlackBerry and then make your choice.

I took a look at a demo of the BB10 and there are several features that trump iOS. Apple needs to wake up. Let's hope 7 is a strong leap forward in usability and features. The truth is that iOS is stale in many regards. I am not leaping over anytime soon however.

i am anxious to see what Jony Ive brings to iOS - probably v7 or later... but with his design eye and fresh input, I am expecting some much bigger things from Apple this year... and I agree that iOS needs some updating... though the average user won’t see it as stale - it’s more stable and something that mainly just works... even if it takes an iteration or two... that’s pretty much always been Apple's approach - release it and then grow it. We shall see, hopefully, soon.

That said. it’s my mobile OS of choice, compared to anything out there today - BB10 demos included.

My $$$, my choice. You get to take your $$$ and vote, too.

What is there to show Apple is sleeping on their operating system? Stale is in the eye of the beholder...there will always be a niche of people who think tech is stale because they are constantly looking ahead, nothing wrong with that, but Blackberry has been dead for years, this is a spark from them in an otherwise lifeless fire, and Apple is still trying to keep up with their demand. Seems most of the market that buys iPhone's is pretty happy with the OS, so i doubt we're in for any major enhancement or revamp from Apple, just a continued polishing of what has been working perfectly anyways, just like they always do.

BB10 is a hail mary with one step in the grave, iOS is a successful and working machine...people's requirements change (both in necessity and luxury), but as it looks now, iOS is making more people happy than bored.

To the OP, just my 2 cents:

Buying a new phone is a major investment. You want to support a platform (ecosystem and apps, updates, etc) that will still be viable for years to come.

Five years from now, iOS and Android will still be here. Will BB? I'm not so sure. Don't get me wrong - I *hope* BB 10 is a success but I just don't have the confidence that it will be. I suspect (and I hope I'm wrong) they're going to go the way of Palm.

So getting back to your question, definitely go with the surer thing: the iPhone 5.

Some of my "hypothetical" features of BB10 have been demonstrated to attendees at CES over the past few days and it seems that Motley Fool believes that they are actually worth the investment. If RIM fails to deliver at the end of the month, as you suggest, they will certainly deserve to be pilloried.

Last year on CNBC they had an analyst who spent 5 mins trashing RIM. He then concluded by saying to an audience of business folk and investors, "you can't play Angry Birds on a BlackBerry".
What he didn't seem to realise is that whilst he is playing Angry Birds on his iPhone, his competitors are doing business, with his clients, on their BlackBerries.

That's fine, but you're not at CES, and weren't when you made the comment, you were going on what anyone else could have read online about preliminary info about BB10, there were no facts (and there are still none, what we will see on the street is not always what is shown at these shows and developer experiences). You were listing off features for the sake of argument, features that are unknown right now since there is no official release on what exactly BB10 will consist of to the consumer, and thus, you were being hypothetical.

That said, i honestly hope Blackberry hits a home run with this, it'll echo development across the board to all manufacturers and we'll enjoy new features on all devices if Blackberry finds some success...i just don't see it happening, but that's just one man's opinion.

blackberry has been able to play angry birds, angry pigs, pandas vs ninjas and other varients for ages
Buy Angry Birds Seasons - Download Angry Birds Seasons - Buy Games from BlackBerry App World
i know thats no big deal but it can do some things people dont think it can, like skype for example - bb7 has skype its just specific carriers that allow it and for those that dont skype to go lets them skype with skype credit

the features the other user talked about are already on the final phones:
The Complete BlackBerry 10 Video Walkthrough: Surprise, It's Neat

(the bentley demonstrator accidentally shows the z10 blackberry at 4.30 and quickly switches to the dev alpha to complete the demonstration through the phone app)

sorry for the links, i just didnt want people to think im talking out of my *** with no references

edit: @op im not a fan boy for either platform although i own an iphone 4s, bb9900 and a lumia 920 and im currently scoping out upgrading my 4s to a 5, wait for bb10 to launch on january the 30th and then go to a store and play with the demo units see which YOU prefer, neither phone is better than the other overall as it depends on how the user needs the phone to function

your question was a lil silly though as on imore obviously people are going to prefer the iphone and if you posted this on crackberry people would prefer the opposite, maybe using a non biased tech forum could give you a better debate on the subject but its still down to you to test them both at the end of the day

BB10 is new, so give it a little time. Windows phone was just like that, except they had more apps.

Still isn't working out real great for Windows honestly...and it's been out for a good bit now.

@ben233...my comment about angry birds was a bit of sarcasm, mainly just a shot at the marketing that is surely coming for BB10, where they show that their new phone can do what everyone else can now.
