quick question..

I use the messenger app on my OS X machine and I can only text non iMessage people ?

it says message failed with iMessage

any settings I change ?

When you go into the Messages settings on your Mac, do you have your phone number listed under the section that reads "Start New Conversations From"? Are you running OS X Yosemite?
