Ethernet Problem with Macbook Pro

I have switched over to ethernet from wireless because it is a stronger and more secure connection for internet. My only problem is when I wake my mac from being asleep the ethernet take about 20 second to turn on, and then when I have my mac shut off for a long about of time such as when I sleep and turn it on and the ethernet doesn't turn on so I have to restart the computer 1 one 2 times to get it to work. What can I do to help? Thanks
