I have a very fast new Mac mini with an SSD drive and a sata drive. I also have a WD 2 TB and a Segate 3 TB Firewire 800 drives connected. When these external drives are sleeping, start up of some applications will be more or less suspended until the drives awake.
Why would Safari need to browse my firewire drives prior to displaying its' home page? No information, to my knowledge, is linked to the firewire drives. Same with Outlook 2011, for example. When these drives are turned off or not sleeping, Safari will start displaying its home page instantaneously.
Would Thunderbolt react differently if build around sata drives which could also be in sleep mode at some point?
