Why does my El Capitan Apple Mail inbox open to oldest unread message instead of newest?

El Capitan Apple Mail inbox opens to oldest unread message instead of newest

I've just upgraded to El Capitan, and when I open my inbox in classic view (with unread messages bolded) it goest to the oldest of my unread messages instead of the newest unread message. I've checked all the viewing preferences and search forums but can't find a solution. Any help on this would be appreciated. Thanks.
