I used my friends dev account to download it, but I kept getting this error. Do I need to put in my serial number on their account?

I don't gunk you need to register for OS X betas? At least you didn't need to last year.

In order to get the updates, you need to register with the beta/AppleSeed programs to get an AppStore redemption code - which is then managed via the Mac AppStore. If the OP got a copy of the installer, it will not install unless the AppStore account has the beta associated with it. As far as I remember, that has always been the case.

And with the AppleSeed program you have to go through the registration process with each new "dot" release (10.10.3, 10.10.4, 10.11, etc).

That is correct. It started working after registering my MacBook with my friends dev account. Although for some reason it says OS X Yosemite instead of El Capitan
