I thought Yosemite might be the last OSX my ol' MacBook Pro would get... Blessed Ordure this makes my day... just saw it cross my twitter feed.

OS X 10.11 release notes of the first developer beta list El'Cap as supporting the following Macs - the same that are able to run Yosemite:

- iMac (Mid 2007 or newer)
- MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer)
- MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer)
- Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer)
- MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer)
- Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer)
- Xserve (Early 2009)

I don't believe that any device (Mac or mobile) was dropped for support for either iOS or OS X. That has to be a first.

Not sure I'm ready to try El Capitan on my 2010 MB, but then again, in due time.

I have a MBP 2008 2.4GHz 6G.

Previously I tried to install Mavericks but the MacBook became very unstable. I experienced a lot of beach balls and sometimes the system would just freeze.

The El Capitan update claims to be compatible with my hardware, but I was wondering if there is anyone out there actually using it on the older DuoCore 2 processors and what are your experiences?

Well, sadly, EC will not reliably run on my MBP.

I had a spare 500G drive, so after downloading and building a USB installer (OS X Disk Maker), I swapped out the internal drive and installed it. The initial install went through with no problems, but immediately afterward, App Store showed the iTunes 12.3 update and it was never able to fully download it. The system would freeze after 200MB or so.. (3 times). Any time the system went to sleep, I would wake it up but get the beach ball before I could even enter my password. I was able to download Numbers, but again the system would freeze before it finished installing.

So late last night I swapped the drives back and have returned to my reliable Mountain Lion system. I desperately want the interactive features of the newest OS's, but it will have to wait until I can purchase a new MBP. Being in Brazil, that is not really something I can just go out and buy as Apple products are almost 2x more expensive here than in the States. (Tariffs are killer here on ALL electronics).

it's running fine on my MBP circa mid 2008.

I really am glad for you and do not doubt it. I am just frustrated that the experience is NOT mutual. Is it too much to expect a current OS to work flawlessly on 7+ year old hardware? Probably. But for there not to be any acknowledgement that it may not be a painless experience is only an attempt by Apple to make themselves look better and non-accountable.

Disclaimer: I have owned Apples since my first 512KE and used Mac OS from System 4. I have worked as an Apple certified Technician and was an OSX Technical Certified Support Specialist. I am about as pro-Apple as they come. I hope this post reflects more of critical response rather than just angry venting.
