How do I keep the right side of my ipad from showing conversations in imessage?

I'd like it if when I have my imessage open, that it could show my contacts on the left, but a blank screen on the right, as if I have none of the contacts were selected. Just so that my conversations aren't on display unless I click on a contact. Is there a way to do that?

On an iPad, the screen will always show the messages pane. The only way to clear it is to delete the messages.
