Given that so many people are criticizing the iPad for "just" being a giant iPhone, do you think Apple should have unveiled the iPad first? Then, the iPhone would be "just" a smaller iPad that could do phone stuff. Or do you think Apple did it right?

They've done it in the right order for sure.

The iPhone has made more people aware of the Apple brand, and so they were able to build more hype around the iPad announcement.

They did it the right way, they brought out the iPhone this brought everyone the capabilities but for some the only thing that was a slight hamper was the size of the screen to type, browse and read webpages, etc. Then tada something to fix those problems :D

The whole app store ecosystem wouldn't be as strong if it had launched initially for iPad - the nature of iPhone apps is that they are simple and portable, but lend additional features and use to a device someone already carries - their mobile phone.

By launching in this way, Apple encouraged mass adoption (everyone has a phone) more than if they had launched with the iPad (most people don't have a need for a tablet, and one of the most compelling things about the iPad is the functionality leant to it by the already available collection of software).
