Re: What movie are you watching?
I put a review in the movie section...but to be honest, if you were going into this film expecting a story like bladerunner, the nostalgia of forbidden planet or the experience of the matrix, you were going in with the wrong targets in mind. This film would have been more closely associated to the Godzilla series (the original films from Japan), japanese robot manga, and even the japanese giant robot craze in the 70's through the 90's.
Notice the consistency there? This was an homage to a very popular Japanese cinema culture...and it was done with finesse by Guillermo because he, if nothing else, is a character master artist, and these almost cold and lifeless robots were just gorgeous interpretations of what that culture did for so many decades (seldom successfully). He took robots and gave them the human characteristics of the pilots that were in them...almost like an attitude.
Now I'm not here to tell you that you should have loved the movie, but looking at the films you suggested after seeing it, perhaps you entered it with a different expectation than what was intended by the premise and the background of the kind of film it was...or maybe you just hated it for your own person reasons. Looking at what it was based on, I personally felt it was damn good...and he did an amazing job creating that universe...but I'm just one opinion in the sea.
