If you go to the Introduction forum to the Meet the Ambassadors thread there is a description on how to become an Ambassador. In short, a person is picked because they are helpful in the forums and an active participant that iMore would like represent them.

Ambassadors are picked by the Ambassador Team Leader or the Community Manager. They can also be recommended by Moderaters.
