I have yet to buy any books through Apple's iBook store, so I have a few questions about how it works. Thanks in advance for any and all replies.

Q-1: If I buy books through iBooks, are they backed up to the cloud by Apple?

Q-2: Can the iBooks purchased be read by any device, iPhone or iPad, pc or Mac, either on device or via internet connection?

Q-3: Can iBooks be read via iTunes, either online or offline?

Q-4: Are the books available online only, or is the content downloaded onto the device as well?

1 - yes
2 - any of the iOS devices. (It's really lame that there's not a OS X reader)
3 - no
4 -the content is saved on the device and is available when offline

Thanks Cottonberry. It seems maybe the Kindle or Nook apps may provide a wider user experience?

They do. Whether on iOS, Android or Windows Mobile (I believe), you can read the e-books you purchased from Amazon and Barnes & Noble as long as you have their Kindle Reader & Nook Reader apps installed.
