Yeah I find it quite odd that apple didn't build that feature in from the start. In fact, iCal and google calendar are based on the same technologies, so interfacing them isn't a problem. If you are interested in learning more, they are based on the iCalendar standard (RFC 2445)

Definitely seems more responsive. Just prior to the update (maybe the past 2 days or so) my SMS was acting pretty sluggish (the typing was really laggy, causing a lot of typos) but that seems to be OK after the update. :)
