Why won't the fan on my Macbook turn on?

The fans are generally very quiet. The only time I hear my fan is when I am encoding a video or rendering something. This is when you are usually working your MacBook the hardest and the fan speed will ramp up, thus making more noise. Same with my iMac's.

You can install the iStat Pro Widget which will allow you to monitor the fan speed. Or you can pay for the iStat Menus 5 app that will allow you to monitor almost everything on your Mac. The Pro widget is dumbed down but still shows quite a bit. iStas Menu is pricey but well worth it. I have been using it for a couple years and really like it for monitoring my machines when I am working them hard.
