    Default MacBook Pro shorted out

last year i installed 16 gb Crucible memory to my late 2012 MacBook, a month later i plugged a passive USB hub into a unused USB port on the Mac, the display blinked out and i momentarily smelled the odor of burning plastic, i disconnected the hub and pressed the power button but the smell got worse so i unplugged every thing opened up the bottom case and found the memory chips distorted and hot. upon further examination i found a really tiny press connector just above to the upper left side of the top edge of the battery that looked ripped off the logic board, my question is could a passive non power USB hub cause this much damage?

Maybe. It could also have been due to bad memory chips, but I'm only speculating. By the way, does the late 2012 MBP support 16 GB RAM?
