It is currently sitting on my lap and is rather warm on the bottom. Any hints or tips as to what I should check out to see if something needs to be replaced before i pay for an SSD and can't return it?

Note: I think I hear the fan running slightly, not quite sure though.

Sitting on a lap can make it run warm, in my experience. Get smcFanControl and see how it does with temp/fan when on a hard surface where it can cool properly.

smcFanControl for Mac | MacUpdate

Also, certain apps will make it run more... I know Chrome affects my battery (makes it work harder)

Are there any numbers I should look for? Obviously if the fan isn't working that's the starter, but what would a high temp be?

It the fan isn't running you will know quick. When I put an SSD in my Mini I didn't attach the fan right when I put it back together. The case was cooking.
My temp hovers under 100* and the RPM less than 2,000 if I remember right. Maybe 1,400 or so if it's just doing routine stuff. I can look when I get home.

I'd appreciate that! I won't be home myself for a few hours, so I'll download that and see what my results are

It's running around where I said, 95-100* and 2000rpm. Varies up and down a bit depending on what's going on. Just safari and iMessage are open.

sorry, I got wrapped up at work, I just installed it. My computer has been on for about 10 minutes, sitting on my ottoman, its at 131*F and 2001 RPM, now at 127 1996

Probably about right. Sitting on an ottoman doesn't really cool. Mine will go up like that too on my lap. Seems like it's ok :)

Awesome! I just had it in sleep mode, sitting on my lap, 120-2004. as long as the numbers look good I'll be getting my SSD soon, unless theres any other hardware I should be looking at being faulty?

Nothing you can really check. Hard drive would be what I would expect to fail and you're going to address that. SSD is a game changer.
