when typing, my cursor jumps to another part of the screen erratically. How can I prevent this?

I use a 13" MacBook Pro with El Capitan (10.11.1). think i read its some setting in preferences but this was a while ago, so don't recall what.

If you have an external mouse of any kind, try adding that and changing the setting to stop the trackpad from working when an external mouse is added and see if that stops the issue.

I found my palms were brushing the trackpad occasionally, causing the mouse pointer to jump about.

Also, I heard that pushing down on all four corners of the trackpad at the same time can help reseat it.
