External Hard Drive.....

Hello iMore forums, I have a question.
Okay, so to begin I am not very knowledgeable on Mac OS, just recently got a Mid-2014 Macbook Pro 13" Retina, and I wanna know, can I purchase an external hard drive and save everything on the external hard drive rather than on my Mac just to save storage on it?

Yes you can save all your files to an external drive. It's works just like it would on PC.

I just purchased the mid-2014 model as well and I also purchased a 2TB portable seagate drive. I did buy the 256GB rMBP to be safe (and so I can have all my pictures from the current year on the actual computer), but everything else is on the portable drive.

Just a side note though, the partition format will matter. When I was with Windows all my drives were NTFS, which OS X can read but not write to (or at least without some work arounds). FAT32 is cross platform but has a file size limit of 4GB and seems slower. Since I have no need to access the drive from a Windows machine I just use Apple's HFS+ and created a small (60GB partition) that is FAT32 just in the off chance I need to transfer something to a Windows machine.

FYi...if you were to use "ExFat" you can jump between both no problem. No file size limit either.
