And I would save $1,000 and buy a Windows laptop. Why does a 13 year old need a Mac at all? Most schools are still teaching Windows, since that's what is used in the majority of businesses today.

I would skip retina for the teenager. They will need a new Mac again before college and that will be the time to go top-of-the-line. Right now the standard 13" MacBook Pro would be the way to go. Gives them all the features they want and need, while saving you the cash on flashy upgrades.

I agree that if for school a Windows based laptop as teens can be rough on things and you don't want a $1000.00 plus mac ruined as opposed to a PC laptop for what you can but @ about $400.00 and get a decent one.

Only get windows if you don't mind your teen getting viruses, and you having to remove the virus or pay someone to remove it. Macs are good for teens because of this reason. But I wouldn't go for a retina display model. A lower cost MacBook Air might suit the needs of the teen unless they are gaming or doing some sort of graphic design.

It won't cost you $1,000 to remove viruses. Not worth the money for a teen.

Yes you could save a lot of money with a PC, but if you really want a Mac buy a Mac. Also a lot of business are using both Mac and PC's so it good to learn both OS's

Agree!!

Besides Windows runs most of the software they are going to need, pc games included!
You should start with a decent PC and then upgrade when needed.

Buy what you think the kid deserves...if you asked me (as someone who doesn't have kids and thinks they don't deserve high end electronics), i would tell you that you're a fool for buying a 13 year old a retina MBP, and would realize this when you're having to replace it because it's been destroyed by him/her. Buy a 13 year old an older macbook to see how they are with taking care of things of that nature...less invested, less of a loss when it happens (and if your 13 year old is anything like my nephews, or even remotely close, it WILL happen).

To speak on the computer itself...there's really nothing on the retina MBP that is going to magically help your teenager do anything better or easier with the higher res screen (besides enjoying porn or something in ultra retina quality, lol).

Exactly. I don't think a 13 year old needs a MacBook Pro. I've never had a MacBook and I'm 18. But I will be buying one with my own money for college in the fall.

Hey guys gimme a option whats better for a 13nth year old kid a mac book pro with retina or without it?

So, what did you decide on? I really hope you went with the Mac and weren't swayed to a PC by many of the negative opinions in this thread.

I think you should look at the refurbished mbp, and the money you save use towards buying windows 7 to install through boot camp or a vm. This way he has windows if he needs it for school or just to learn 2 Os. I'm not an apple fan boy, but I love the reliability of the mbp so I have mine setup with OSX, windows and Linux and love the option to run any depending on what I need. This will teach him to be a tech fan boy and not pick a side

I got a new Mac my freshmen year of High School as well as my Senior year to go into college with a fresh one. I could not be more grateful that my parents bought me that MacBook, I know how to do so many more things than my friends that use PC's. Plus it got me to be more creative, with my parents pushing me to use iMovie, Garage Band, and keep their photo libraries in iPhoto. Now that I'm a little older, and I know the OS I act as my families tech support, when my grandparents got a Mac Mini, I set it up and showed them the ins and outs, etc. If you were thinking about getting your kid a Macbook, I would say go for it. Just sit them down before and have a talk about it. Tell them this isn't a cheap machine, so you have to take care of it. And its not a basic laptop, so you'll learn how to use it, and it won't just be used for FaceBook.

That's when I got my first Mac. I've not looked back since. 👌

The best decision would probably be a Macbook Pro 13 (non retina). It's thicker than a Macbook Air (heard that seems to be a bit fragile since they are thin) and has a number of customization until s/he needs a better option (upgrading hard drive, RAM..). It is also portable if s/he is lugging it around so there's that.

For a 13 year old? What does your 13 year old need Retina display for? Is your 13 year old taking that Macbook to school? A Mac Mini would be a better and more affordable idea but if you insist on getting your 13 year old a Macbook, go to Mac of All Trades website->Buy and Sell Refurbished and Used Mac Products | mac of all trades <--and buy a used Macbook and save the money.

I would ask a simple question: what business is it of yours what anyone else buys or doesn’t buy for their child(ren)? It’s the OP's kid, the OP's money and the OP's choice. Would I do it? Probably not... but he didn’t ask us for our opinion on SHOULD he... he asked which was a better option... so answer the question on the table or move along...

Don’t try to raise his kids, and he won’t try to raise yours...
