Older Apple displays and MacBook Air... How to connect?

I'm looking to pick up a used display either a 27/24" led. Can someone tell me what adapters I will need to connect it to my MacBook Air and any drawbacks other than the lacking thunderbolt?

That will depend on the ports on your MacBook and the display you'll end up getting.
