So, the 12-hour battery life with the Haswell chips was the point at which I said, okay, okay, I'm getting a MacBook Air before I lose my student discount.

Brought it home. Looks lovely. Sets up easily, as all Apple products do.

Then... the wifi drops out, even though the computer says it's connected to the internet.

Reboot. It happens again. Reboot. It happens again. Wifi for 30 seconds, then nothing, even though it says it's connected.

So then I go online on another device, see the discussion forums online full of complaints. But someone claims, with the first update, it may be fixed.

Tether my phone, and burn 90 MB of data downloading an update for OS X, and reboot. Still doesn't work. After some more fiddling with resetting wifi settings, etc., etc., it's now working. For the moment.

My question: did any of the rest of you experience the wifi issue? If so, once you updated your OS, did the problems go away?

It's a known issue in the new Air's. Updating your OS with the latest Patches will fix the issue for you.

    Updated and it's still here.

Oh well. It isn't a huge rush for it to be fixed, as I bought AppleCare. But am reminded that it's good for wait for a product to be out for 3-4 months before buying. Let _others_ deal with the first bugs with new products.

I thought I read someplace that they were replacing the new MacBook Airs that were having WIFi issues.
Regardless, I would make the call to Apple.
Wow! 12 hours of battery life.
    Good Luck

Latest apparently working fix is changing service order in network preferences:

    Seems to be working again.

But yes, 12 hours' battery life! Crazy:

Now if the wifi will only stay working this time, I'll consider it a good purchase!

And off again. Then on again.

    Okay, this sucker's getting replaced.

Beautiful machine with crazy long battery life, though. Claims 14h left just now, on present settings.

Update: naturally, once I say that, the computer starts working perfectly...

I ended up just slightly changing the settings on my wifi network at home and that dealt with it for good, finally.

If it's just a software issue, then the upgrade to Mavericks should end it. If it's hardware, I'll use AppleCare when that's clear.

Understandable why people are so annoyed. Last device I had with wifi issues like that was the Playbook....

Apple released a patch for this today. I hope it ends the issue.

    Installed.

It seemed to make the wifi quicker, so I'm guessing it fixed at least part of the problem.

Now a moot point, anyway, as I've got Windows 7 installed as well as all the other stuff needed for academic work on it. Can treat it like a Windows-based ultrabook most of the time & learn OS X at my leisure.

Did this problem ever occur under Windows?

I didn't install Windows till after I installed the upgrade to OS X (and have not had problems with connectivity), but other articles suggest that it never affected Windows wifi performance.

Which is good. Means it just was a software bug.

    Just as a simple update:

Yes, the wifi issue is fixed. (There's an odd Boot Camp wifi after a restart issue, but that just needs a reboot when it crops up.)

The Air now runs like a dream. All well.
