As in title, I've been given an old IPhone 3G. I know its IMEI, its ICCID, and its serial number. I don't know its Baseband or Firmware. Apparently it was jail broken to IOS 4.2.??? It's now just showing a USB plug pointing to an Itunes logo. What do I use on a MacBook Pro to get the Iphone working ? Thanks.

Try this:
Download TinyUmbrella The Firmware Umbrella - TinyUmbrella
connect your device and click 'fix recovery'
that should kick your device out of recovery mode and boot it

I got the Iphone into DFU mode and this is the log:

Got fed up with waiting ! Wouldn't start by just using power on/off button. Used power on/off button and HOME button together. After about 10-15 seconds, the usb plug & Itunes logo showed up.

I guess Tiny Umbrella didn't work ?

Next idea ?!!!!!!!!!

iphone 3g or 3gs?

are you needing it to be/remain unlocked or just want to make sure you can maintain a jailbreak?

Quite DEFINITELY a 3g. Model A1241

This phone was originally locked to Rogers. I use FIDO. I thought it had to be jailbroken and then unlocked to make the change to the new supplier ?

U don't need to be jailbroken to get it unlocked. U can purchase a hardware unlock online or even call Rogers and have them unlock it for u.

Yes, for $50. Trying to avoid that. Especially as I've already spend that much already when I first had it. My mistake was subsequently taking Apple at their word on Itunes and doing a upgrade to the latest IOS. I thought they meant 4.3, but I think they tried to install IOS 6 !

OK, then, how do I just unlock it from it's current state ?

Plenty of options online and a lot cheaper than $50. Even some members here unlock devices.

I was hoping that in this forum I'd be able to get specific instructions on how to do it myself, using software such as pawnage, etc. that are free. If this is not the case, please tell me and I'll stop wasting my time. Most of the postings seem to be just skirting around my problem.

I've answered your question 3 times already. Sorry it's not what you wanted to hear but those are your options

I see. Well, I was hoping for more technical input, but I guess I came to the wrong place. Goodbye.

Most people haven't dealt with an unlock in such a long time that it's not something known off the top of one's head.

The dev team blog will have all the old posts relevant to your task.

As far as iOS, they installed a 4.3 version. The 3G wasn't on the list for iOS 5, let alone 6. They couldn't have tried to install 6. However, it's possible the restore upgraded your baseband. After all, THAT is really what you're concerned about.

Instead of flipping your **** switch when you don't like the answer you're getting, perhaps you should become technical enough on your own to understand why most of what you've said so far is nonsensical?
