New, Restoring after jailbreak?????

Sorry, new here and to jailbreak. I have a 4S looking to jailbreak, I am alittle confused. I backup phone, perform jailbreak, then, is it necessary to perform a restore after jailbreaking?

If you're also updating iOS, you can restore from backup if you want your data placed back on your phone. (This is what I've always done so I don't have to set everything up from scratch.) If you're already on the firmware you'll be jailbreaking, there's no need to restore anything.

What iOS are you running?
