No, you need to back them up via a cydia backup. xBackup is good - To be honest I would stay as you are.

Another member has done a full restore, then restore from backup, then running jailbreak. Now it seems to be going through.

Have you tried a restore yet?

my 4s is doing the same thing! have tried it 5 times now and it just keeps coming up with 'hmmm something seems to have gone wrong'

Okay fixed it on my Ipad 2, maybe this will work for everyone. Backed up, Put it into DFU mode, did a full restore in DFU, set up as a new ipad, did Absinthe, worked perfectly then restored from backup.

Almost had some heart break

It should work without DFU.

DFU is not required.

Restore and try again.

Doing mine later - But I'm 02 UK, but I don't think the network has anything to do with the jailbreak.

I restored my phone and now Absinthe recognized my phone again trying round two on my iPhone 4 VZW hopefully it will go through. I am not touching it this time.
