Hi, I have an iphone 3g. It's running 3.1.2 w/ ipad baseband 06.15

I'd like to upgrade to 4.2 but i have some questions.
Do i upgrade to 4.2 via itunes first...and then jailbreak/unlock using redsnow?

Or do i just upgrade using the custom firmware i download when i do the jailbreaking?

I'm kinda confused so please let me know and thanks!!

If you need to unlock you never upgrade via iTunes. When you have the iPad baseband you can't ever upgrade using iTunes you have to always use a custom ipsw made with Pwnage Tool(Mac) or Sn0wbreeze(Windows). Go to iClarified - Apple News and Tutorials and go through Tutorials, iPhone, Jailbreak and look for the firmware you want and get the tool. If you need Sn0wbreeze go to the iPhoneheat website and look for Sn0wbreeze. If you need an old Pwnage Tool version throw me a PM, add me to twitter and I will get it to you.

The custom firmware will already be jailbroken...you add the JB code as part of the process of building it, and also install Cydia and other mods you might want. Then you just need to use iTunes to restore, using that already jailbroken firmware.
