My icon shadowing nightmare
this has been an ongoing battle for me..
i have edited/renamed the following files in the Springboard.app
No Icon Shadow in Cydia for 4.2.1 doesn't work either
doing this obviously took care of most of my icons.. (see wallpaper, dock and switcher pics) but there are a few that simply will not behave
for example: observe the Pandora icon replacement
i gave up on this little project a while back but my obsession has got the best of me.. again thank you Massie for helping out and anyone else.. i have decided to create this thread in hopes that maybe, possibly, anybody has ran into the same situation and found a fix
i have emailed the CarbonX Dev as well so i will update with his comments
i'm open for suggestions/tips [ iPhone 4 iOS 4.2.1 ]

Some good info here:
Icon Modding - Black-transparent background (tough one)
Including the idea that some apps might include their own icon shadow png within the app folder.
On another note: what will we do to stay busy once this gets solved?!?

i have been reading about people having to customize each individual icon in order to make this work because the only fix, for now, will square your traditional icons see my next post
email received from the CarbonX Dev
Thanks Ė glad you like it!
The files you have renamed, doesnít affect this issue, but look here:
Black background behind icons - CarbonX HD - Elegant and stylish theme for your iPhone 4!
At the moment Iím working on a Pro version of the theme. So far I have redesigned more than 1.400 elements!
Take a look at mt Facebook page, there youíll find screenshots of it!

I see a black background behind my icons?
Use ssh, iFile or similar and navigate to System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/MobileIcons.framework
Locate this file: AppIconMask@2x.png
Rename this file to AppIconMask@2x_BAK.png and respring your device using WinterBoard.
Now the background has been removed.
This "fix" unfortunately also causes non-themed icons to show up squared without rounded corners.
Nothing to do about this, so you decide what you like the most!

Looking at the UIPrerenderedIcon settings
Also look here.
...And more about AppIconOverlay and the like.
The biggest problem I'm running into in researching this is that it's never clear what works with what version of iOS. It ought to be an Internet Rule that any discussion of mods includes a compatibility list!

I just followed everything this guy said in in the first post of this thread >> Icon Modding: how to remove black icon mattes? - MacRumors Forums Massie posted.
I'm in disbelief, it's been so long!
EDIT: Forget what I just said, while that did get rid of that annoying black background, it made all my other icons square.. WTF
Back to square one..

outside of creating custom icons with Photoshop i'm afraid this project has come to an end once again

All right...one last ditch effort. I dug around in the Pandora.app file today and ran across these two images: NoticeBackground.png and NoticeBackground@2x.png (see attachments). It seems unlikely that they are what you're after, but I thought it was worth mentioning as at least the shape/color seemed promising. I wonder what would happen if you tried deleting them?
after visiting with Thomas Thrane, CarbonX Dev, it sounds like good things to come in his upcoming release. he submitted it this weekend and anticipates it to be released in about a week
here is some of our conversation thus far, regarding the new version soon to be released
Well to theme the calculator, Iíve made 103 graphics!
Then there are 289 app icons, a bunch of files to make the shades, gradients, badges, backgrounds, folders, shadows, etc.My next plan is an iPad theme, when the new iPad is out.
And smaller *themes for the iPhone (and cheaper). This theme has taken me about 120 hours to makeÖ

Extualy is very simpell to solve.
I did it in the ipod 4 v 5.1.1
Just make sure this is in the theme
and you have to put 2 text files in there and rename them to
Now when your choose your theme your ipod wil not reconize these files as .png so it wil not use them when you have this on but u can set it off from your winter board by unselecting it.
so when your theme is off your icons will be normal
And if your theme is on and u have still some icons that are not themed just theme them u can easely theme them your self bij addind a map into the bundle map in your them with the icon (maps name must be the name that u find in the info.plis of the app under identifier)

wow! talk about a blast from the past. but honestly i do not think i'll ever know if the recently mentioned method will work since i do not mess with themes anymore
one thing is for sure though. this once again shows how helpful members are around here, especially Massie. he has always been a good source of info and the guy will help troubleshoot until the end. which is another reason why he's got my vote for the next iMore Member of the Month
