how to tell software version of a wiped phone

I picked up a 1st generation iPhone at a garage sale and I thought I would use this as my guinea pig for jail breaking experimentation. My question is, without activating the phone is there a way to find out what version of iOS is running on it? The phone is in the state they arrive new in with the connect to itunes to activate screen.

Not sure but you could try connecting it to a program like iphonebrowser. I don't know if it will read an inactivated phone though.
