What Iphone does your friend have?
If 2G / 3G, don't have to worry about SHSH. Upgrade and downgrade pretty easily.
If 3GS, is brand new or used? If used, there's chance previous owner saved his SHSH hashes on Cydia. If brand new, there's a tiny small chance Cydia has the hashes saved. Saurik, Cydia guy, says there are more shsh are on file and even some of them haven't ever JB and just got a new iphone may actually have an shsh on file.
Going to assume it's not Iphone 4 since 4.0 is first firmware for them.

You don't need the shsh blobs now!
Here's the site that tells you how to do it....steps only take around 10 mins!
I've done it and was on 4.0.2 with my 3gs and I successfully rolled back to 4.0.1 and am jailbroken again after upgrading the firmware by accident.
Replace the x with t's and w's.
