3GS not getting signal bars like other Iphones, help

I was at a party last night. 3 other people had Iphones. 2 3GS's and 1 3G. Mine is a 3GS but everyone had at least 2 or 3 more bars than me. I tried my phone with and without a case on it to see if my signal bars compared to it. This has been an issue on 3.1.2 jailbroken, 3.1.3 non jailbroken and iOS4 jailbroken & non jailbroken. So I'm wondering whats going on. I even sat the phone down on a table. I didn't reset network settings simply because its been a useless thing for me cause its doesn't seem to help.

I just miss the days where my phone had 4 or 5 bars.

Were their iPhones updated to iOS 4.0.1? that's the firmware where Apple started using the REAL signal strength calculations, and not the ones they were previously using. The old ones were designed to make AT&T's network look great, but they did this by lying about te signal strength.

What iOS is your iPhone on?
