3G 16GB 3.1.2 with no SH's on Cydia

I gave my girlfriend my old 3G on FW 3.1.2, we missed the window for upgrade to 3.1.3 and consequently have no SHSH on sauriks server. To add to this problem the phone is not charging properly and is not recognized by iTunes when connected, it is allowing wifi access and other than these problems seems to work fine. I did replace the lower module (dock, mic and speaker and aerial?) but this didn't sort the problem. I seem to remember this happening once before and sorted itself out after I "restored" in itunes.

Anyway, the obvious solution to the problems above would be to upgrade to v4.0.1 but she is relying on some JB goodies and I'm not totally sure I'll be able to JB once I've upgraded...not even sure if the phone will be recognized in DFU.

The main problem is the inability to "downgrade" if anything goes wrong (because we don't have 3.1.3 SHSH's).

What would you suggest? Or are we SOOL?

The 3G does not need SHSHs for 3.1.2 or 3.1.3, just 4.0 and 4.0.1.

Use Pwnage or Sn0wbreeze to create a custom firmware for 4.0.1 and it will upgrade just fine and still be jailbroken.

Why do that, upgrade it in itunes and then go to jailbreakme.com

I prefer custom firmwares to new jailbreak methods that still show to have some issues.

Plus 3g on 4.0 is way too slow and plus with all the issues people are having with this new jb, very unstable.
