Jailbreaking

I am definately new to the Iphone I have used a blackberry forever so can anyone tell what does jailbreaking actually do?

Jailbreaking allows you to run 3rd party apps not sanctioned by Apple ie. Backgrounder(allows you to run apps in the background, multitasking), SSH(Ability to get into your phone and copy files to and from your phone), different tunes for SMS, Themes, etc.
