I have searched both the net and this forum. I just want to confirm that I must Jailbreak my iphone before I can install any VNC server like veency on it.

My goal is to be able to view, receive and send SMS message I receive on my phone through my PC. Originally looked like I could do it with tightVNC but then saw that I needed to have a VNC server on the iphone. Can't find one if the phone is not jailbroken.

Is my understand of all of this correct?

Yes, you will need to be jailbroken to run VNC server on your phone. Just in case you're interested, you can read more about it . It's an old post but it does confirm your suspecians.
