It's due to a hardware change Apple made to the later versions of the 3Gs. I assume the Dev Team and/or geohot is working on it but I haven't heard a word about it. I'd love to have an update on the progress. My 3G was jailbroken but now that I have a 3Gs I'm running stock iPhone OS and I hate it; but I can't afford to be out somewhere, have my phone reboot for whatever reason and be unable to find access to a computer.

That doesn't surprise me. I'm sure they'll have a lot of work to do to get 4.0 jailbroken as soon as possible. Still though, the new hardware that makes the tethered jailbreak necessary will be the dominant soon. They'll have to figure it out eventually.

TETHERED JAILBREAK!!!

Do a search for "tethered jailbreak"!

If this is a new 3G, then it can still be jailbroken or unlocked, but you just can't ever let the battery die, or reboot the iPhone when the iPhone is not near a computer.

Why?

The phone is new. Apple updated the hardware on newer models. Ultimately, when you get the "Connect to iTunes" message, DO NOT RESTORE.

Connect the iPhone to the computer, spend 30 seconds, run Blackra1n RC3/4, RE-jailbreak, and that's it.

It takes less than a minute.

ALSO, being that this is a new iPhone 3G, that requires a tethered jailbreak, I also suggest getting a battery case.

A good one is "Case-Mate Fuel" (google it) but it's ugly as sin. It will however, act as a case AND a charger. Or you could go to BestBuy an pick up a "InCase PowerSlider" case.

That, and a car charger. That way the iPhone never goes off. If you have a laptop, that's ideal/superb.

Let me know how that goes.

It's not the battery I'm worried about. I almost always have a way to charge it. It's the possibility of the springboard crashing, or an app that needs to reboot to finish installing, or some various bug that makes the phone reboot.

I could take my laptop where ever I go but if I'm going out to a club or a bar or something, the last thing I want to do is bring my laptop with me. Hell some places around here won't even let you bring a bag inside.

Then, get an older 3GS or don't j/b.
