Missing app store icon; can't transfer apps

A friend of mine sold me a jailbroken phone (so I could use it w/T-Mobile) and everything is fine but I noticed there's no App store icon. Also, I downloaded some apps from the store via Itunes on my pc-but when I go to the tab to transfer them to the iphone, they're all listed but I cannot check the checkbox that allows for transfer. i'm guessing this has something to do w/the App store not being available on the phone??

I noticed, also, that there are Restrictions on the phone so I'd have to know the password to get into them b/c I don't even know what they are and cannot get hold of my friend yet.

I found a site for the icon problem (i cannot list here b/c this is my first post) , but i'm leary of installing more things (it mentions Quickgold, Poof, and SBSettings) as I didn't jailbreak it myself so I'm a bit in the dark. It also says to disable/re-enable restrictions which I cannot do yet on account of my friend.

Anyone know what's wrong? I have searched the forums but couldn't find anything exactly like what my problem is (tho maybe I used the wrong keywords).

Well, it sounds like you may need to restore the iPhone as new, basically like it was the day it came out of the store.

You don't need any passwords for that, you'd just need to do a DFU restore.

Are you on the current (3.1.2/7D11) iPhone operating system/firmware?

Here are some DFU Restore details.

DFU RESTORE

Try the steps listed below, but make sure that you have downloaded the latest version of iTunes before attempting to do this.

Put the iPhone into DFU mode so you can do an iTunes firmware restore follow these steps:

Step One
Open iTunes and connect the iPhone to your Mac or PC.

Step Two
Press and hold the Home button and the Sleep/Wake button at the same time.

Step Three
After exactly 10 seconds, release the Sleep/Wake button. Continue holding the home button until iTunes pops up with a message telling you that it has detected an iPhone in recovery mode.

The iPhone screen will remain black.

NOTE***: It may take a few attempts to get your iPhone into DFU mode. Generally, I hold down both buttons then release the Home button just before I think the Apple logo would appear. If you are still holding both buttons down and you see the Apple logo you are holding them down for too long!

Step Four
Download from iTunes and install the latest firmware (3.1.2/7D11) and install it. Then, when it's done, simply either restore it from a previously created backup, or set it up as a new iPhone and re-sync all of your stuff back onto it.

That was quick!
Thanks...I may try that..but if I do this, will I have to jailbreak it all over again? Will it erase any of my contact list?

Yes, restoring to factory settings will erase everything. But here's a trick - e-Mail yourself all of your contacts, one by one. Then restore the phone, and use the emails to get them back on fast.

And YES, you will have to jailbreak AND unlock (jailbreaking allows you to use software other than Apple sanctioned apps, while unlocking allows you to use carriers other than AT&T, such as T-Mobile).

However, here's a guide to jailbreak and unlock. I didn't know what iPhone you had, so I just threw up the one fo. The iPhone 3G. The process for the iPhone 3G is exactly the same, but if you have the ORIGINAL iPhone 2G, the process differs greatly. Here's the guide for the 3G/3G.

JAILBREAK/UNLOCK IPHONE 3G

Don't download any firmwares from any sites. There's no need to even use PwnageTool right now either. Connect your 3G to iTunes. (Hopefully, you're running the newest version of iTunes) When it asks you if you want to update your iPhone, SAY YES. This will erase any an all jailbreak and unlocks previously there. DON'T PANIC.

Download and install the official firmware, 3.1.2 from iTunes.

Go to blackra1n.com and download blackra1n.

Now, after you restore from iTunes, when everything is about 98% done, it will ask you to insert the SIM card that came with your phone from AT&T. If you have AT&T, great. If you don't, a/k/a T-Mobile, INSERT THAT SIM CARD, and then follow these instructions.

Open up blackra1n on your PC, and then click "Make it rain" and jailbreak your phone. This will also 'hacktivate' your phone with your alternate SIM card. (Note: follow directions at the end of this post to fix Push Notifications, YouTube and Wi?Fi for hacktivated iPhones)

YOU MAY NEED TO ATTEMPT THIS MULTIPLE TIMES FOR IT TO WORK CORRECTLY. Sometimes there are minor errors. Let it do it's thing. It is okay and even somewhat expected.

Once blackra1n.app is installed to your springboard (a/k/a iPhone home screen), choose to install "sn0w"( a/k/a blacksn0w) from your iPhone. Once again, make sure it that you connect to Wi?Fi first. It will be the only way you can install Cydia/Rock if you're not on AT&T.

1) Open up the "blackra1n.app" on your iPhone.
2) Tap on "sn0w" until a green check mark appears next to it.
3) Tap "install".
4) Watch for the splash screen telling you that it was successful.
5) Turn your iPhone off.
6) Insert your SIM card.
7) Turn the iPhone back on.

After installing sn0w, install Cydia.

1) Open up the "blackra1n.app" on your iPhone.
2) Tap on "Cydia" until a green check mark appears next to it.
3) Tap "install".

Cydia will ask you questions, and to update. Select "Graphical User", and "Update All". Let it restart and reboot. Once it does it's thing...

-OPTIONAL-
If you have data or MMS problems with ANY carrier, you may want to google or wikipedia "iPhone APN Settings" to find a way to fix those issues. However, if the plan for the cell carrier SIM card you've inserted does not include data, then your Internet/e-Mail/maps/gps etc won't work. You will have to add data/MMS to that SIM cards plan for them to officially work.

Voil?. You're updated, jailbroken, and unlocked on the newest OS.

ADDITIONAL NOTES:
For some, the new blackra1n HACKTIVATED jailbreak was causing problems with Wi-Fi, YouTube, and Push Notifications. Here is a quick guide on how to fix these problems.

Wi?Fi
1. Go to Settings>General>Reset>Reset Network Settings, then click "OK"
2. Reboot your iPhone, when it comes back on Wi?Fi should be fixed, but next time you reboot you have to do this again.

YouTube and Push Notifications for "hacktivated" iPhones.

1. Go to Cydia
2. Tap Manage at the bottom
3. Tap Sources
4. Tap edit in the right hand corner
5. Tap add.
6. Type cydia.iphoneil.net
7. Tap done
8. Search for "PushFix" and tap on the first result
9. Install then confirm
10. Reboot your iPhone.

Well...a few things.

When reading thru the directions, where you say (NOTE: etc etc) do you mean at THAT point to go down to the bottom for the hacktivated phone process? (which includes activating WiFi)? Because Cydia will not have been installed yet. --This is related to later, when you say "once again, make sure you can connect" making me think there was a first time I had to connect, which leads me to the first point I made about Cydia...so there I'm confused.

And the part where you say to insert the SIM card near the beginning--you also say it again farther down (the blackrain)...so does that mean I had to take it out at some point between those two?

And I do not have a data plan and also only have the pay as you go "plan". And as it is now, gps, email, etc works fine. So there must be a way for it to work.
And I have the 3G model. And I DO have 3.1.2 firmware version.
Also I have, in addition to Cydia, two other things called Icy and Winterboard...??

My friend txt'd me very briefly, then went offline, and said "You don't need to re jailbreak it. It's just a matter of learning the phone."
What that means, NO idea...
Any clues?
