I've been reading that I can't jailbreak because the iBoot rom is updated. Is this true? I don't think I should try Blackra1n because I'd like the ability to unlock down the road.

Also been reading that I could do a tethered jailbreak, but that I'd have to do that every time I powered off the device. Is that true? Where can I find more info on this tethered jailbreak?

It's been a while since I've jb my old 3g 2.2.1, but I'm reading as much as I can.

Not entirely sure about tethered jailbreaks, but no current jailbreaking methods work. Apple closed the exploit jailbreakers used to use. You're just going to have to wait until they figure it out.

Glad I got my iPhone 3gs in September.

There's no jailbreak for the new 3GS right now, not even tethered.

Blackra1n doesn't make it so you can't unlock, it's the baseband, 5.11.07, that makes it so you can't unlock right now. We'll see what happens with the unlock, but right now it cannot be done.

It won't prevent me from doing an unlock (if it's released) down the road, right?

You can't jailbreak ( assuming it has the new bootrom ).
