Did iTunes backup my contact even not sync with PIM?

I have an iPad and an iPhone 4. Both synced on same computer (PC). My iPad synced with the whole iTunes library while my iPhone was not. I have no problem at all of syncing these device untill I want to upgrade the OS of my iPhone.

So my iPad synced with my PIM (Personal Information Manager) wich is Windows Adress Book. But my iPhone was not syncing with this PIM.

What I concern is that iTunes back up the whole contact information on my iPhone even I didn't sync with the Adress Book?

I've done a lot of iPad iOS upgrade but never did it for my iPhone.

If you were not syncing you PIM with iTunes, then iTunes didn't back it up. You should sync with Google so that you don't have to worry about it.
