How to move iTunes?

Does anyone know how to move your entire iTunes library to an external drive, and still have it work when you click the iTunes shortcut (on Mac)? I can physically move the library to a folder on a drive, but when I open iTunes, it acts like it's a new program...no content at all. I have opened "preferences" and selected the new "iTunes media folder location", but nothing changes. I need to free up some space on the HD ASAP, so, can anyone help????
