bypass iTunes to sync a file?

Just wondering if there is a way to sync 1 single file to the iPad without using iTunes to do it. Like if it's something that does not fit in the categories Music/Movies/Podcasts/Videos? (Those are the only choices I have in iTunes).

Do I have to make a playlist every time I want to transfer just 1 file? Maybe I need an app like "iPhoneExplorer" but for the iPad??
