iPod 4g still has iOS 4 on it should I ipdate to 5.1

Title really says it all, should I update my sons iPod to 5.1 or keep the last version of 4.x.x on it. I'm concerned with it slowing down or other problems.

It should be better to update to 5.1, and it can't get slow down so much.

I updated mine, but really the only thing i use it for is netflix, and the only reason i bought it was to listen to music. i have noticed the battery life is not as good as it used to be. that could be because i updated via OTA
