Was the camera on the iPod Touch 5th gen optional?

Unusual Ipod Touch

My husband received a gift of a 5th generation(?) iPod touch without a camera. Nothing on the packaging indicates this. When was that ever an option? It's a great gift but I'm puzzled.

Visit the page and key in your iPod touch serial number and it will reveal the details.
To check serial number: Go to Settings>General>About...long press on Serial Number to copy it.
Apple did release an iPod touch 5th gen version with only the facetime (front) camera to reduce the cost but discontinued that version later on imo.

iPod 5th generations only come with cameras if they are 32gb+
8gb or 16 gb don't come with it
