Will apple repair or replace an ipod touch that doesn't turn on from water damage?

I've gone in there before and seen someone bring one in with a cracked screen and some other problems and it wasn't under warranty like mine and they gave her a new one for free, will the same apply to mine?

She might have been lucky. I've always thought once the product is out of warranty that it. All work carried out would be chargeable.
