The spot in the iMore podcast where Rene calls the switch on the left of an iPhone the mute switch. The relevance being this will finally drive @Ledsteplin over the edge. I call dibs on his parking spot at iMore HQ.

This is quite possibly the funniest thing I have ever seen on iMore, ever. Can we get a Best Answer?

That's not all the tech writers have been wrong and misleading about. Rene only used the term "mute switch" so as not to confuse @devilishbanker.

Rene's remark merely confirms my point that silent and mute mean the same thing.

Not according to Apple! Because it does not mute everything.
What the ring/silent switch does NOT mute:

Alarms from the Clock app (example, setting an alarm to go off at 6 am).
Timers from the Clock app (example, setting a 15-minute countdown timer).
Audio from the iPhones Music app (example, playing the Beatles Hey Jude).
Audio from the iPhones Video app (example, playing an episode of Lost).
Some audio from third-party apps like streaming radio, video, and music (examples, playing a radio station via the TuneIn Radio app or a video in the YouTube app).
Tones when tapped in the iPhones various settings (for example, when changing your ringtone or text-message alert tone) and in the Clock app (for example, when selecting what sound the iPhone will make when the timer runs down to zero).
Tones when changing the volume of Ringer and Alerts in Settings>Sounds
A sound alert when sent from the Find My iPhone service.
Government alerts, including the Amber alert.

If all that stuff still makes noise, it's not all that silent either!

Ring/silent. One way it rings, the other way it's silent with those alerts it does act on. LOL. Now, go back to your sandbox!

It's not silent if the items you listed still make noise right?

Again, the terms are swappable. For example:

Muting your iPhone doesn't mute everything.
Silencing your iPhone doesn't silence everything.
Muting your iPhone doesn't silence everything.
Silencing your iPhone doesn't mute everything.

All of those mean the exact same thing.

Thank you. It's an app called "Color Splash". Allows you to gray everything out and pick which items you want the color to show up in.
