Google voice sms hangouts integration?

I just got a pop up today in google voice stating that I can receive sms via hangouts. I'm not seeing that option in either app after accepting the prompt. How do you get the integration to work?

Go into your chat settings in Gmail and at the bottom is a setting for SMS and voicemail integration.

There is, but it is a VERY SLOPPY integration.
If you manage to start an sms conversation on a different platform, or if someone sends you an sms, you can then see those conversations in Hangouts on your iPad, but each one will be identified by their phone number, not by username, which makes them hard to identify, for one. For two, I have NOT yet found a way to START an sms conversation from my iPad. Google cross platform integration is crap.

Yeah I'll stick to the regular google voice app until the integration is improved on iOS.
