Apple Maps night view

This feature seems to work randomly. Sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't. Tonight driving in the dark it did not work. Any ideas?

To be honest, I've never really paid any attention to it so I assume it worked as it should during the times I used it at night.

Used it last night after reading this and mine worked fine as it should have.

Were you using Turn-by-Turn direction or just the app?

You'll notice the screen getting dark just as you type "start" the turn-by-turn directions.
The screen goes dark if, as far as I can remember, it's night-time _and_ if it's dark around you. I don't know about tunnels during the day.
