How do you download it for free and unlock it with the promo code?

you have to go to the app store and look for the redeem link.
there you can put the promo code, and it will allow you to download the app for free (if the code was not used by anyone else yet)

Go to the App store, featured tab, at the very bottom there's a button that says "Redeem".

Or you can do it in iTunes on your computer. Go to the iTunes store, then on the right hand side, under "quick links", there is "Redeem".
